Rathotsavam celebrated

NELLORE : The annual Rathotsavam of Sri Venugopalaswamy temple, Mulapet, Nellore, was celebrated with gaiety and traditional enthusiasm on Tuesday. A large number of devotees, who gathered on the occasion, pulled the decorated chariot, which passed through Brahmin Street, ESR High School area, Potti Sriramulu statue centre and Rajagari street. The Trust Board Chairman, M. Chandramouli Reddy, the trustee, T. Subba Reddy, and other functionaries took part. Various departments including the Transco and the municipal corporation provided the required services. Temple authorities provided amenities for devotees. - Staff Reporter

WUA polls held

NELLORE: In the first phase of elections to Water Users' Associations (WUAs) in Nellore district on Monday, more than 300 associations elected their representatives unanimously. The district has got 765 WUAs of which court stay was obtained in respect of 75 associations. Accordingly, elections were held to 608 minor associations and 43 medium associations on the first day. In most cases, the elections were free from political ideologies. The second day elections on Tuesday were held under tight security and passed off peacefully. _ Staff Reporter

YSR to interact with farmers

NIZAMABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will arrive at Gandimasanipet village in Yellareddy mandal in connection with the Praja Patham programme on April 27. The district administration is making arrangements for the interaction of farmers with the Chief Minister to know about the benefits accrued to them due to the construction of dug out farm ponds (DOFPs). - Staff Reporter

Punnaiah's tour

KARIMNAGAR: The Chairman of the State Commission on SCs and STs, Justice K Punnaiah, along with some other commission members would tour Karimnagar district from April 29 and participate in various programmes.

The chairman and the members would visit some villages and participate in the civil rights day on April 30.

The chairman would visit Manthani on May 1 to unveil the statue of Dr B.R Ambedkar, open the Ambedkar Bhavan and also participate in a seminar on Dalits' problems in the district, according to an official release here today. - Staff Reporter

Physical test for constables postponed

HYDERABAD: Physical efficiency test for recruitment of police constables which was supposed to be held from May 9 to 19 has been postponed in view of heat wave conditions State. M.L. Kumawat, Chairman, State-level Police Recruitment Board, said the decision to postpone the test to June 15 and onwards was taken on Tuesday following inputs from district Superintendents of Police. - Staff Reporter

College tense after clash

BHIMAVARAM: Tension prevailed at St. Luthern College here on Tuesday following a clash between a section of students and the college management over mass copying during the 10th and Intermediate single sitting examinations. Excise raids: tribal drowned in checkdam

KHAMMAM: A tribal youth, Boda Sakru, chased by excise personnel during a raid on bootleggers was drowned in a checkdam in Anjanapuram village under Tallada police station limits on Monday. Enraged by the death, villagers staged a rasta roko blaming excise officials for the death. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: G. Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri was examined in the Additional Assistant Sessions Court here on Tuesday in conspiracy case. It pertained to the attempt on the life of the former VAO of Maddelacheruvu in Kanganapalli mandal, K. Laxminarayana Rao. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in thunderbolt strike

KARIMNAGAR: Two persons - M. Laxmi (28) and M. Buthchanna (38) -- were killed when a thunderbolt struck them at Thummenala village of Dharmapuri mandal on Tuesday. Laxmi was cleaning her house while Buthchanna was attending to the nature's call when the thunderbolt struck.

Free `upanayanam' at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: The TTD will conduct free mass `upanayanam' on May 19 at Purohit Sangham, located on the premises of Sudarsan free choultry. The TTD has made it clear that participants should not give anything either in cash or kind to purohits performing the ceremony.

Postal circle crosses revenue target

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle has surpassed the revenue target of Rs.94 crores under business development for 2004-05 and has netted Rs.96.84 crores, according to the Chief Postmaster-General, T.S. Govindarajan. He said in a press release here on Tuesday that the amount was Rs.36.4 crores more than the revenue earned during 2003-04, recording a growth rate of 60.26 per cent. - Staff Reporter

Plea to include Warangal in IT corridor

Hyderabad: The TRS MP from Hanmakonda, B. Vinod Kumar, in a letter to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Tuesday sought inclusion of Warangal in the proposed IT corridor. He said Hyderabad-Warangal IT corridor would help in the development of Telangana. - Special Correspondent
