Unauthorised team The Nagamalai Pudukottai panchayat sanitary staff members have formed a team and started collecting Rs.10 per house to remove garbage, for the past three months. However, streets are not cleaned properly at Gurusamy Nagar. They have dumped garbage near Nadar Mahajana Arts College and Jayaraj Nadar Higher Secondary School bus stops, causing health hazards. Will the authorities set things right? T. Nagarajan, Madurai Wanted dustbins Residents of Pallavan Nagar and VOC Nagar at PP Chavadi throw away household waste in a private land, as the Corporation has not placed dustbins there. Sanitary staff members clean it as and when it is convenient for them. The fouls smell emanating from the heaped waste is unbearable. It is worse during rainy days. Will the councillor concerned look into this? T. Raj Pravin, Madurai. Traffic congestion No one can stand dumping of garbage on Pookara Street (near the West Avani Street). The sanitary inspectors' office has almost become a dumping yard. Garbage-laden tractors with no cover on them block the road, causing severe traffic congestion. Will the officials do the needful? B.M. Hussain, Madurai. Accept cheque payment Cheque payment for BSNL telephone bill is not allowed from April onwards. This has been printed on the reverse side of the telephone bill stating that only cash or DD will be accepted. Cheque payment is comfortable and easy for customers. Electricity bills are being paid by cheque and one is at a loss to know why the BSNL does not accept cheques. To obtain a DD is time-consuming, besides other difficulties. I request the BSNL to reconsider its decision. R. Gopalakrishnan, Madurai. Recharge coupons The BSNL is issuing recharge coupons for its `excell' prepaid cell owners in various denominations. The validity period for Rs.1000 coupons is four months and 12 months for Rs.3000. But it has fixed the validity period for Rs.2000 coupons as six months instead of the proportionate eight months. If the BSNL increases the validity period up to eight months, it will be more useful and attractive. M.S. Raghavan, Madurai. Unnecessary procedure I renew a term deposit with a nationalised bank at the close of each term. In the last transaction, I signed on the deposit receipt without a revenue stamp. However, recently, the bank insisted upon signing with a revenue stamp when no repayment was desired. It also advised that a savings account be opened to credit the money on maturity. In this connection, I find from the account opening form for term deposit of a scheduled bank that the amount of deposit on maturity can be paid back either by a banker's cheque or demand draft. Evidently, opening of an SB account only for the sake of getting back the deposit does not seem to be essential. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai.
