CDs seized, one held

TIRUCHI: : Sleuths of the Video Piracy Cell, Tiruchi unit seized 1,200 pirated compact discs of new Tamil films at Thiruverambur here on Monday and arrested one person.

The police here said the pirated CDs were seized from a shop in the Tiruverambur union complex. The name of the arrested accused was given as Anand who was later remanded.

The Video Piracy Cell has registered a case.

Assistance distributed

The Collector, V. Pandian, distributed welfare assistance, given through Mahalir Thittam, to the tune of Rs. 79,790 to members of women self-help groups and panchayat-level federations here on Monday.

The assistance was given at a public grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate.

An official release issued here said the Collector gave away weighing and packing machines, costing Rs. 1,725, to each one of the 16 self-help groups. He also distributed a grinder to the Sokkanathapuram panchayat level federation. Welfare assistance was also given to Alathudaiyanpatti panchayat level federation.

`Ban air horns'

The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has urged the district administration to take steps to ban honking of air horns by town buses within the city limits.

In an appeal to the Collector, the Kazhagam's district president, S. T. Rajendran, said the traffic police personnel should take appropriate action and ensure that town buses halt at the specified bus stops. Notwithstanding sign boards put up by the police, buses continued to stop in front of these boards, he claimed. The buses did not halt at the bus shelter opposite the clock tower in Gandhi Market though the shelter was being used by small traders.

He said town buses coming to Chathiram bus stand from Thuvakudi and Boiler should be diverted via Prabhath theatre until the road over bridgework at Palakkarai was over.

Action against quacks sought

The Thennindia Nugarvor Padhukappu Kulumam has urged the State Government to take stern action against quacks operating in the district.

In a letter to the Chief Minister Special Cell, the Kulumam, director/chief executive, M. Muthusamy appealed to the Government to take appropriate action against those medical institutes issuing fake certificates. He claimed that there were several quacks operating in the district.

Work completion ordered

The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, has ordered the speedy completion of the work on shifting of the underground sewage pumping mains on the Heber Road towards expediting the construction of the Palakkarai road overbridge in the city.

Mr.Singh, who made an on-the-spot inspection of the progress of the work, directed the contractor to complete the work at the earliest. He also directed the officials to close the open drains passing through the site and repair the narrow road passage to enable pedestrians to cross over without difficulty.

The City Engineer, V.Sivaraman, the Corporation Executive Engineer, R.Chandran and other officials accompanied the Commisioner.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 53.28 feet today. The inflow was 185

cusecs and the discharge 800 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
