Tiruchi
Train halt The train Nos. 2635 and 2636 operating from Madurai junction to Chennai Egmore and vice versa never stop at Srirangam which is one among the 108 Vaishnava centres and a tourist place. Since, thousands of pilgrims visit the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, I request the Southern Railway to introduce a stop at Srirangam for five minutes on both directions. M. Krishnaswamny, Srirangam. UGD deposit Ref to The Hindu dt 16-4-05 news item "City residents hope for better amenities." The Tiruchi Corporation's finance position is improving, the flat owners, mostly senior citizens, can now hope that their long pending demand for reduction of deposits for underground drainage from Rs.6,000 per flat to Rs.6,000 for the apartment as a whole to be shared by the owners of flats in a particular apartment would be met shortly. A. Sampath, Tiruchi. Bank branch needed No nationalised bank has opened a branch at Anna nagar where most of the residents are employees of Central Government, State Government or Publis Sector Undertakings. If, a branch is opened here it will also cater to the banking needs of several nearby villages. This is one of the reasons for the backwardness of this area. It would be helpful if a nationalised bank opens a branch in Anna Nagar. R. Lakshmanan, Tiruchi. Direct train Changing trains are highly inconvenient and disturbing to passengers going on long journeys, particularly for senior citizens. For instance those proceeding to Hyderabad from Tiruchi have to rely only on the private buses. Though the passenger earnings from Tiruchi railway division has been heavy, there is no direct train to Hyderabad, which is a fast growing important destination in the South. Hence, a biweekly train from Tiruchi to Hyderabad could be introduced for the benefit of the travelling public. David Peniel, Tiruchi. Margin walls The rail over bridge on the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass road at Senthanneerpuram, Sanjeevi Nagar and near Maris Theatre have no margin walls. Traffic during the night hours is heavy in this stretch and two-wheeler riders find it hard to ride owing to the bright headlights of vehicles coming from the opposite direction. Hence, accidents have become common in these bridges. Will the corporation would look into the matter immediately? C. Ramalingam, Tiruchi. Roads dug up Almost, all the main roads in Tiruchi city are being dug by telephone companies for cable laying works. Since they don't close the dug up portions properly, it poses untold hardships to motorists. As per tender conditions, the contractor is supposed to re-lay the road properly after the work is over. But it seems, these conditions are not complied with, causing difficulty to the road users. Hence, the authorities concerned should take immediate steps to solve this problem. A.R. Kumaran, Tiruchi. Plastic bag menace The menace of plastic bag is increasing in Tiruchi city limits. These bags which are thrown into the Cauvery is preventing free flow of water. So, the government should ban the use of plastic bags so as to save the environment. Instead they could promote using mud containers, paper bags. P. Ramesh Balajee, Tiruchi. Tax collection The Karur municipality has collected an excess property tax of Rs.14 lakhs and an excess water charge of Rs.10 lakhs, as per their annual accounts for 2002-03. code No 4015. Due to clerical errors, by not posting the cheques and Demand Drafts, and voucher adjustments, in the previous years, the assessments concerned and double demands made wantonly for the same assessees have resulted in erroneous arrears. As the March `05 collection was over, at least the defects may be corrected in the next financial year. R.S. Moorthy, Karur. Beggary menace In Kumbakonam bus stand, an elephant owner uses the pachyderm for begging. The mahout even makes the tusker put its trunk through the windows of the bus and ask the passengers for money. The police should ensure that there was no such menace in future. R. Jayasankar, Kumbakonam. Basic facilities The Saratha Nagar, situated nearer to Pudukottai town, has no street lights and a drainage system for the past three years. Though many petitions were submitted there has been no response from the authorities concerned so far. Will the officials look into the matter? S. Aravind, Pudukottai.
Srirangam.
