COIMBATORE: Public Health officials sounded relieved on Tuesday with the number of fresh diarrhoea cases in Mettupalayam and nearby Karamadai, about 40 km north of Coimbatore city, remaining at 11 throughout the day. Of the 12 fresh cases admitted to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital, one was found to be appendicitis and was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in the city. Of more than 100 admitted to the Government Hospital in Mettupalayam and the primary health centre at Karamadai since Saturday, 14 and nine patients respectively were discharged on Tuesday.
No panic
Officials said that in sharp contrast to the steady flow of those affected by water contamination from Saturday till Monday, the much lower turnout of patients on Tuesday indicated that the intensive surveillance and awareness drive had paid off. "There is no panic among the villagers now as we educated them on the cause and preventive measures. They were also provided with enough assurance that treatment will be effective," the Deputy Director of Health Services, V. Veerapandian, said. All overhead tanks in 17 village panchayats and two special panchayats had been cleaned and chlorination stepped up. "If at all people turn up with problems on Wednesday they can be only those who had not completed their full course of medicines," he said. "Greater focus on quick recovery is given as each of these villages is preparing for local traditional festivals." Dr. Veerapandian said that as the situation improved, the medical camps in the villages would be withdrawn.
