Telly fare all set to turn lacklustre

Cable operators consider hooking up to Siti Cable

HYDERABAD: The deadlock over connection rates between cable television operators and the Multi-System Operator (MSO), C-Channel, is threatening to snowball into a controversy that could end up with television viewing turning into a lacklustre affair in the city.

Three days after cable TV operators voiced their protest over Hathway's C-Channel jacking up the per connection rate from Rs. 125 to Rs. 200, there has been no response from the MSO.

This has infuriated the Twin Cities Cable TV Operators' Association, which according to its convenor, K. Prabhakar Reddy, is considering to switch loyalties to another MSO, Siti Cable, in a couple of days.

The association, which has over 750 members, has approached the Siti Cable regarding the changeover for which there will be no technical hitches, Mr. Prabhakar Reddy says.

However, he admits this move could turn out to be gloomy for the public since the Siti cable does not have major pay channel bouquets -- Star and Sony.

The absence of these two could mean that over 25 popular channels, including Star Movies, Star Sports-ESPN, National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, MTV, Channel V and Sony, will go off the air.

"True, but we are left with no option. The C-Channel has so far not made any move even for discussions. If we have to continue with them, the subscription rates have to be increased to at least Rs. 300, and the public will not be interested in that. The only alternative is to change the MSO," Mr. Reddy says, adding that one consolation would be the availability of Telugu channels and no rise in subscription rates.

Efforts to communicate with the Hathway Managing Director, Rajasekhar, have proved futile.
