Identity of girl student cannot be revealed, says official

BANGALORE: The topper in the SSLC examination secured a total of 620 marks out of a maximum of 625 marks (99.2 per cent), officials of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board said, without revealing the candidate's identity. "I can only say the candidate is a girl," the board Director, T.M. Kumar, said.

Distinction for many

The rank system was done away with a few years ago, and students who secure 85 per cent marks or more achieve "distinction." This year, 20,821 students had this achievement to their credit compared with about 17,000 last year, Mr. Kumar said.

As many as 249 schools in the State secured 100 per cent pass. In 68 schools, no student passed the examination.

Till last year, the board punished teachers of schools which registered a pass percentage of 20 or less, by denying them an increment. From this year, it is likely to punish teachers of schools with a pass percentage of 40 or less.

Among the high-scoring candidates were S. Dharini, a student in a school in R.T. Nagar high school, who secured 608 marks out of 625 (97.2 per cent); Kavya N. (96.96 per cent), Ranjitha Rao S. (96.48), Kanchi A. Chajed (96), Supreetha R. (95.68), Kavya N. (95.68), Dharmendra Chatur (95.68), Mamatha D. Agarwal (95.52), Arjun A.K. (95.2), Pooja Rao M. (95.2), Darshan M. (95.04), Swathi B. (95.04), Yogesh Bansal (95.04) and Sunitha M.N. Gowda (95.04), all from St. Ann's High School, and K. Geethanjali (94.44), a Florence High School student.

Mr. Kumar said the board has taken action against 20 deputy chief examiners for bundling OMR (optical mark reader) sheets along with answer papers and not handing them over separately to chief examiners.

`Ahead of schedule'

He said the SSLC examination results were declared much ahead of the schedule. The announcement of results is much faster in Karnataka compared with Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
