Spurned love behind acid attack

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man has been arrested by the New Delhi police in connection with the acid attack on a 16-year-old girl near Ambassador Hotel on Humayun Road in New Delhi on April 22. He had apparently hatched the conspiracy to harm her along with his younger brother and another woman.

According to the police, Guddu, who was being questioned in this connection, was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly confessed to having been involved in the incident. Guddu told the police that he wanted to marry Lakshmi, the victim, but the latter had rejected the proposal. He then decided to take revenge and planned to throw acid on her face.

Guddu asked his brother, Imran, and his "friend", Rakhi, to throw acid on Lakshmi's face. On the fateful day, when Lakshmi was walking down Humayun Road, Rakhi, who was pillion riding on Imran's motorcycle, threw acid at her. She sustained injuries on her face and chest. The duo then escaped. The police are now trying to trace both of them.

Earlier, Guddu, who used to work in an embroidery factory, was on good terms with Munna Lal and Radha, Lakshmi's parents. He knew them for the past three years and often visited their house. For the past sometime, he had been trying to persuade Lakshmi to marry him. However, Lakshmi did not agree.

After his proposal was rejected, Guddu began troubling Lakshmi. He was said to be very possessive and would even beat up boys who were seen talking to Lakshmi. Fearing harassment, she had also stopped going to school.

The police said 22-year-old Imran, who worked in a factory, had a criminal record. He had been arrested in a couple of stabbing cases. His "friend" Rakhi, a mother of three children, had been having an affair with him after her husband died some years ago. Her husband's family had accused her of killing him and she had also been arrested in this connection.
