Alleged terrorist among three held

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: Three persons, including an alleged terrorist who had links with Babbar Khalsa, have been arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly planning to commit a robbery. The police have recovered firearms from the accused.

Following a tip-off, the police had laid a trap at district park, Outer Ring Road, in Paschim Vihar on Monday afternoon. Four persons appeared on the scene in a Maruti car. When the police team challenged them, one of them opened fire. However, the police team managed to overpower three of them, while one of them escaped. Those arrested were identified as Raj Kumar, Neeraj Kumar and Jugnu. The police said Raj Kumar had fired at the policemen. Apart from firearms, live cartridges and knives have been recovered from the accused.

The police said Raj Kumar had been arrested by the West Delhi police in July 1998 for allegedly carrying 18 kg of RDX, 10 hand grenades, five pistols, 100 live rounds, one AK-47 rifle and detonators in his truck. Earlier, he had remained in Patiala jail from 1992 to 1995. He was said to be in touch with terrorists even after he was released on bail in 2002. In 2003, the South-West Delhi police arrested him in a case of Arms Act. After his release, he shifted his base to Karnal.

Of later, however, Raj Kumar had rented an accommodation at Prem Nagar in Sultanpuri. Neeraj had also come from Karnal and was staying with him. The duo had also developed friendship with Jugnu, a grocery shop owner. The trio had conducted a recce of at least a couple of offices in Shastri Nagar. They were expecting huge booty at these offices.

Another bank

robbery bid

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: In the second such attempt in four days, robbers broke into a bank in East Delhi but were unable to get to the money.

Robbers broke open the gate of the Preet Vihar branch of State Bank of India over Monday night and tried to break the safe but were unsuccessful, police sources said today.

On Saturday last, robbers had broke into the United Commercial (UCO) Bank branch inside Karkardooma court premises in the East but could not open the safe.

Fruit vendor shot at

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: A fruit vendor was shot by two youths after his cart hit their motorcycle in Central Delhi, police sources said.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in G.B. Road area leading to an altercation between the vendor Ikram (18) and the youths.

Though the youths left the place of the incident, they returned after some time and shot Ikram.

He had been hospitalised where his condition was said to be stable, the sources said adding efforts were on to trace the youths.

Home Guards deployed to check water theft

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHI: With water theft and leakage being a prime cause of concern for the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), around 100 Home Guards have been deployed to check this phenomenon.

The DJB informed Delhi Cabinet, which at its meeting today chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, reviewed the implementation of the `summer action plan' of the board, that it had identified the areas where water theft was taking place and had deployed 100 Home Guards for surveillance of the pipelines, according to officials.
