Disturbing

That the Election Commission is contemplating the deployment of Central paramilitary forces in addition to the local police for the by-election to the Gummidipoondi and Kancheepuram Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu is disturbing. The State seems to be steadily descending to the level of Bihar in matters regarding poll-related violence. All the political parties in the State should join hands to curb violence during the polls. They cannot shirk their collective duty to the people, of ensuring free and fair elections. Only when there is a large voter turnout, with minimal police presence at the polling booths, will democracy become meaningful.
