Train young minds

The Marine Drive rape reminds me of the Farakka Express incident in January in which Army jawans pushed five innocent persons to their death. Persons serving in the uniformed forces should undergo psychological training every year.

It is also necessary to inculcate courage in young girls. If only the young girl had refused to be intimidated by the constable or raised a cry for help in the Marine Drive incident, it might not have taken place. Girls should be taught to say `no' in certain situations and this should be done in homes and schools.

The people fear the police more than they respect them. This gives the police personnel a powerful feeling and they forget that they are here to serve the people and not rule over them. At the same time, due to corruption, criminals are no longer scared of the law-enforcement agency. What happened in Mumbai is the result of all this. The constable believed he was above the law.

The Marine Drive rape has reinforced the image that policemen are not protectors, but perpetrators. But what is more shameful is the article in Saamna, Shiv Sena's mouthpiece, which said the rape had brought to the fore the dangers of the page three culture, and blamed the increasing crime against women on their costumes. It only reiterates that chauvinistic organisations always support criminals and portray victims as culprits.

Ruchi Sharma,
New Delhi

As citizens we have to stand up to the forces that are responsible for such activities. It is time utterances such as "there will be an enquiry into this" by the powers that be gave way to bold statements such as "I will make the perpetrator accountable" by the people. Kudos to the Mumbai citizens who stood up to the police.

Karthik Narayan,
Chennai
