NEW DELHI: As India sets its sights on developing an indigenous advanced jet trainer (AJT), there are reports that the progress on the intermediate jet trainer (IJT) front is unsatisfactory. The IJT has been beset with problems relating to heavier weight and low thrust engine. Though the two IJT prototypes developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have completed over 150 flights, the results are ``very close'' to the desired performance. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has observed that the ``results have not been found to be satisfactory''. It is estimated that another 350 test flights are required before the aircraft receives final operational clearance.
