Manmohan condoles death

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today condoled the death of former Parliamentarian and president of the Indian National League, Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait, and remembered him as "a true nationalist, a patriot, who had the best interests of our people and the nation at heart''.

In his condolence message, Dr. Singh said: "He served the people of Kerala with distinction and dedication. He was deeply religious and also modern and progressive in his views. In his death, the people of Kerala have lost a valued leader. The nation will mourn the passing away of a nationalist who was committed to the welfare of the downtrodden.''

Expressing personal shock, the Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamad, remembered Mr. Sait as a "prominent personality and a political leader with mass appeal who championed the cause of the Muslim community and toiled throughout his life for their socio-economic upliftment and political empowerment''.

The All India Muslim Majlis-E-Mushawarat (AIMMM) said "he was associated with every struggle of the Muslim community for security and dignity, equality and justice, whether it was the movement for the restoration of the Muslim character of the Aligarh Muslim University, the movement for the defence of the Shariat against any interference by the Executive, the Legislature or the Judiciary, the movement for the restoration of the Babri Masjid, or the movement for the empowerment of Muslim Indians''.
