Kalazar cases on the rise

PATNA: Kalazar and AIDS cases are on the rise in Bihar, former Union Health Minister Dr C.P.Thakur said today .

Dr Thakur said Kalazar combined with AIDS started appearing since 1992 and claimed that he had come across 20 such cases, mainly in Bihar. The treatment of such patients was difficult, he added.

Referring to the case he had handled, he said he had treated a Muzaffarpur resident, who was found to be suffering from kalazar and AIDS. The patient had acquired HIV infection. The wife of the patient got infected from her husband.

He stressed the need for spraying of insecticides to control the disease and said April-May was the most suitable period for spraying of DDT.

He said 14,000 fresh cases of Kalazar had been reported in Bihar and apprehended that the disease might take an epidemic form by 2007 if preventive measures were not taken up immediately. The disease takes the form of an epidemic after every 15 years, Dr Thaku added.

Dr Thakur said he had recently attended a third world conference held in Itlay where all other nations stressed the need to eradicate Kalazar from India. Paswan and Mushar in Bihar were mostly affected by Kalazar. Dr Thakur asked the government to supply Miltefosine and amphoterecine B in the hospitals and other health centres. - UNI
