VISAKHAPATNAM: The Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, on Wednesday said it was for the Government and people to decide whether he should continue or not. Mr. Sen was reacting to the demand made by some women's organisations for his removal, while chatting with reporters here. ``I have to do my job and people and the Government will give me the real rating,'' Mr. Sen said. He did not agree with the observation that the Chief Minister was not happy with him. "Why should he be unhappy? The work done by the police during the last three-and-a-half to four months has made him happy,'' he claimed. On the demand for re-imposing ban on the CPI (Maoist) made by some police officials, Mr. Sen said it was "a natural reaction."
Moving targets
On operations against naxalites, the DGP said his men would not always use weapons with an intention of killing others. One way to deal with moving targets was see-fire-kill but it was not the method adopted by the police. The targets would be warned first. Sometimes the target would run away and sometimes they would fire back. Only such situations would lead to encounters.
Justifies method
``I justify meeting a problem the way it should be tackled. Even the common man has the right to defend himself when his life is in danger.'' Many naxalites had surrendered with arms and ammunition, he said in support of his argument that extremists were not always shot dead. The CPI (Maoist) was not using rocket launchers, he said. The rocket launchers recovered in Anantapur a few days ago were only experimental pieces, he said.
