dated April 29, 1955: Nehru, the artist

Mr. Nehru turned an artist and made two nice pencil sketches in less than half an hour on April 27. While Col. Nasser, Egyptian Premier, and Sardar Naim Khan, Afghan Deputy Premier, were speaking to newsmen at the Raj Bhavan in Calcutta, Mr. Nehru not only quietly listened to their statements, but with a pencil in his hand made two sketches on a sheet of paper. One was of a man and the other of a burning lamp. Later, at the request of reporters he autographed the sketches with a questioning smile: "What will you do with it?" The Prime Minister assumed a new role at the press conference. The Afghan Deputy Prime Minister spoke in French and Mr. Nehru took up the job of an interpreter for a while. He translated Sardar Naim Khan's statement and asked: "Have I done the job correctly?"
