Women's panel seeks Tamil Nadu report on child marriages

Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to enquire into reports of child marriages in some districts.

Quoting a newspaper report, Chairperson Girija Vyas told reporters here on Wednesday that the Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter. It asked the Government to submit a report within 15 days. The Commission had visited six States where child marriage was prevalent and directed the administration to prevent the practice and create awareness.

Among these States — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand — "there are districts of high prevalence.''

While Rajasthan showed remarkable improvement in prevention of child marriage and creating awareness, the performance of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand was not too satisfactory.
