Drop Lalu

The fact that the UPA Government is unabashedly clinging to Lalu Prasad even after the filing of a charge sheet against him in the fodder scam shows that it is no different from any other political dispensation. It does not have any qualms about justifying the inclusion of a charge sheeted Minister in the Cabinet for its survival. By branding himself secular, Mr. Prasad seems to be getting away with everything.

J.V. Reddy,
Nellore, A.P.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should drop Mr. Prasad from the Cabinet if he does not resign on his own. He will prove to be a constant source of embarrassment to the UPA Government, which claims to be different from the NDA Government.

This is the second time the UPA Government is facing a serious crisis of credibility on account of one of its Cabinet Ministers. In July last year, it was in a similar predicament when a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against the then Union Minister for Coal, Shibu Soren, in a murder case. The best course is for Mr. Prasad to resign on his own, without jeopardising the RJD's support for the Government. While his stock will go up, it will also help resume Parliament's functioning.

Nothing will now help Mr. Prasad deflect the nation's attention because the fodder scam has been under investigation since 1996.

Mr. Prasad should resign. Whether the UPA wants him to go or not is another issue. He must offer to quit and save the Government from further embarrassment.

Kamna Arora,
New Delhi

The UPA Government has justified the inclusion of Mr. Prasad saying disqualification is only post-conviction. By the same token, why not induct persons who have already served a sentence for their crime? Every saint has a past and every sinner a future.

S. Srivatsa,
Chennai
