ERODE: Eighty Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies and 27 Powerloom Weavers Cooperatives would produce uniform cloths to be distributed to students freely by the Tamil Nadu Government during the academic year 2005, said the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, here today. He said the handlooms would produce 2,22,953 metres of uniform cloth valued at Rs. 7.09 crores and the powerlooms 23,83,094 metres valued at Rs. 4.39 crores. The Collector said 1,010 houses were built near Chennimalai and handed over to weavers belonging to 25 weavers' cooperative societies. He said electricity connections were granted to 850 houses. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board constructed two water tanks for the area having a capacity to store 60,000 litres each. The Collector said that 22,52,774 sarees and 22,41,788 dhotis valued at Rs. 3,250 crores were distributed free of cost in January to those belonging to the below the poverty line category in the district.
