Gram sabhas to focus on rural sanitation

ERODE: Gram sabhas would be held in all the 343 village panchayats of the district on May 1. The meetings would focus on creating awareness on sanitation programme among the villagers, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Thursday.

Presidents of respective panchayats would present the details of the panchayat's revenue and expenditure during the meeting.

Public can raise questions related to the development of the panchayat. The panchayat presidents will also emphasise the importance of rainwater harvesting, solid waste management, total rural sanitation, water conservation, child labour eradication etc.

The following are the observers to be deployed for monitoring the meetings. The Erode District Revenue Officer, K. Nagarajan - Erode, Kodumudi and Modakurichi Panchayat Union; Project Officer, Women Development, N. Rajam - Perundurai, Chennimalai and Uthukuli Panchayat Unions; the Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, B. Joghee - Kangeyam, Vellakoil and Moolanure panchayats; the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, K. Arunachalam - Kundadam and Dharapuram Panchayat Unions; Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, R. Rajshree - Anthiyur, Ammapet and Bhavani Panchayat Unions; the Joint Director of Agriculture, T.S.R. Ramakrishnan - Gobichettipalayam, Nambiyur and Thookanaickken Palayam Unions; and Principal, Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Extension Training Centre, Bhavanisagar, Jayalakshmi - Thalawady, Sathyamangalam and Bhavanisagar Panchayat Unions.

Our Dharmapuri Staff Reporter writes

All the 251 village panchayats in the district would hold gram sabhas on May 1, said the Collector, Sudeep Jain. He said that observers had been deputed to all the panchayats to monitor and aid the smooth functioning of the gram sabhas.

The agenda to be taken up in the gram sabha meetings was as follows: listing out various beneficiaries through various development programmes, listing out development programmes approved by the panchayats, namadhu gramam and eradication of poverty scheme, construction of individual sanitary complexes under the total sanitation campaign, abolition of child labour, use of iodine in schools, deepening of wells and construction of water harvesting structures. The Collector also appealed to the public and self-help group members to participate in the respective gram sabha meetings and put forth their suggestions on the development that needs to be undertaken.
