Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday cancelled an anticipatory bail granted to the prime accused in smuggling 2,360 tonnes of rice meant for the public distribution system.

Meanwhile, the accused filed a modification petition before the Bench on March 2 stating that he was strictly complying with the conditions and got his condition modified to sign before the Judicial Magistrate, Kovilpatti every Monday.

The prosecution case is that sleuths on August 17 last seized 44, 214 bags of rice weighing 2,204 tonnes loaded in 40 rail wagons at the harbour railway yard in Tuticorin.

The contraband was to be transported to New Delhi. Following the seizure, the sleuths confiscated another 3,181 gunny bags (with Food Corporation of India mark) of rice weighing 156 tonnes at the Tamil Nadu Ware housing Corporation godown - Unit III at Tuticorin.
