Crisis management training vital for teachers: SP

Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR: The Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Das, appealed to school teachers to play an important role in providing safety to girl students, particularly during adolescent period.

Speaking at a workshop on crisis management organised by the Sri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, here recently, he said that teachers should ensure that girl children going in autorickshaws reached home safely.

Similarly, during rainy days, teachers should call the parents of students and ensure that children reached home.

He said that crisis could be categorised into three types, physical, social and emotional. Physical crisis involve road accidents, etc.

Suitable drivers should be appointed by school and college managements to drive their college and school buses.

With respect to emotional crisis, parent-teachers interaction was necessary to solve it.

The Superintendent of Police also stressed on the need for training to teachers in crisis management. He said that committees among teachers could be constituted to tackle various crises like fire accidents.

Ayyarasamy, Divisional Fire Officer (DFO), in his address, said that schools should have emergency exits and fire extinguishers.

Referring to the Kumbakonam school fire tragedy in July 2004 the DFO said that lack of emergency exits, lack of easy access to staircases and narrow staircases were the reasons for the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 94 children. School buildings should be made fire proof and teachers should be trained in tackling emergency situations, he opined.
