Get back to sea, Collector appeals to all fishermen Return to sea for earning livelihood, says Collector

Fishermen of 46 coastal hamlets resume activity

NAGAPATTINAM: The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, today appealed to all fishermen to resume fishing activity and earn livelihood as they were doing before the tsunami tragedy.

Felicitating the fishermen who returned in 18 boats after fishing to the Vellapallam coast near Thalainayar at a function organised by People's Development Association, an NGO, he said that fishermen were now venturing into the sea in 967 catamarans in 27 coastal villages and in 305 fibreglass boats from 19 coastal villages in the district.

He appealed to the fishermen to continue their fishing activity and lead a normal life.

Mr. Radhakrishnan also distributed 40 outboard engines for the fibreglass boats given by the People's Development Association and laid foundation stone for the construction of the first floor of the community centre at Vellapallam at a cost of Rs.8 lakhs.

Joe Velu, Director of PDA, explained the relief and rehabilitation assistance provided to the fishermen in the district.

Mr Radhakrishnan later laid foundation stone at Akkaraipettai coastal village for construction of an alternative building materials manufacturing unit at a cost of Rs.9.91 lakhs for the benefit of women self-help groups (SHGs) under the Swarnjayanthi Gram Swarajgar Yojana (SGSY) of District Rural Development Agency.

The Collector said that the unit would manufacture micro concrete roofing tiles, concrete, hollow and compressed blocks and would go livein two months.

He said that special training would be given to the members of the six women self-help grorups in manufacturing alternative building materials.
