`Crop insurance scheme is better than compensation'

Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM: An insurance scheme covering paddy crop in the Cauvery delta region by paying a premium will be a better alternative than providing compensation to farmers for the crops affected by the rains, floods, etc., said S. Ranganathan, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, on Wednesday.

Reacting to the compensation being paid by the Government for samba and thaladi paddy crops affected by the floods caused by the heavy rains during the northeast monsoon in October and November last year, Mr Ranganathan told The Hindu that the compensation was being paid in most unscientific manner.

Mr. Ranganathan said that the compensation being given by the Government did not benefit the farmers whose crops were really damaged.

He said that it was very unfortunate that farmers in villages were sharing the amount of compensation given to their respective hamlets.

He said that the Government officials used to select agricultural crops in only about 15 hectares to 20 hectares of land in each village as affected by the flood, rains, etc and recommend for compensation although the entire village might have been affected.

What was shocking was that the compensation of (ranging from Rs.30,000 to Rs.45,000) being received by farmers for the 15 hectares or 20 hectares of their affected crop in a village was being shared by all farmers in the village at the rate of Rs.50 to Rs.80 each. As a result, the compensation scheme was not at all working in a proper way, Mr.Ranganathan claimed.
