Bail for 6 women POTA detenus

CHENNAI: : Nearly two-and-a-half years after they were arrested, six women, charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), were ordered released on bail by the Madras High Court.

Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan, granted conditional bail to Reeta Mary, Sathia Mary, Jayanthi Mary, Sathiya, Amalorpavam and Vijaya, stating, "there is no reason to hold that these women will flee from justice." They were directed to execute a personal bond for Rs. 1,000 with two sureties for a like sum and asked to report to the Special Court for POTA Cases at Poonamallee at 10.30 a.m., daily on all working days. The Bench, however, dismissed the bail pleas of the accused men.

Twenty-six persons were arrested by the Uthangarai police in Dharmapuri district on November 24, 2003. A youth was gunned down in an encounter that day.
