NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Thursday denied charges of phone-tapping levelled by the Samajwadi Party members in both Houses of Parliament but said that the Government would conduct a detailed probe in the matter if the Uttar Pradesh Government sent a formal complaint. The issue of the phones of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and the SP leader Amar Singh being tapped was raised in the Lok Sabha by Ramjilal Suman and in the Rajya Sabha by Janeshwar Mishra (both SP). Mr. Patil said that officials had "orally'' told him the charges were incorrect. Dwelling on the procedure, Mr. Patil said that phone tapping could not be done without the concurrence of the Union Home Ministry. He had summoned officials after seeing media reports and from what they told him, "this perception is perhaps not correct.'' "However, we will conduct a probe if the U.P. Government details the charges in writing.''
