Woman killed in road accident

TUTICORIN : A woman was killed and two others were injured when a motorcycle hit a pedestrian at Masarpatti near here last night.

The police said the incident occurred when the motorcycle, driven by Selva Jothi (28), hit the pedestrian Chelladurai. Both of them were injured while Chellammal (58), Selva Jothi's mother, who was in the pillion, was injured critically. She was shifted to Ettayapuram Government Hospital but she died en route to Kovilpatti Government Hospital where she was referred. — Staff Reporter

Held on murder charge

TUTICORIN : Karthik (19) and Balan (33) were arrested last evening on the charge of murdering Vasantha (45) here on January 22 this year.

Both of them were remanded to the judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Nabbed for theft

TUTICORIN : The police arrested Paramasivam (28) on the charge of stealing goats from a farm situated at Tholappanpannai near here today.

Sources said he was arrested based on a complaint from Kandasamy that goats at his farm were missing since April 27. — Staff Reporter

Hunt on for couple

TUTICORIN: The police are on the lookout for a couple, who allegedly assaulted Aadikkalam (37) at Tiruchendur yesterday.

Elango and his wife Julie attacked the complainant with a stick owing to previous enmity. Aadikkalam was admitted to the Government Hospital here. — Staff Reporter

Fast observed

TUTICORIN: Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) observed a fast at Kovilpati today protesting the move to implement Workers Prevention Act.

The police said that 58 persons including eight women took part in the fast. — Staff Reporter

Liquor bottles seized

TUTICORIN: The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) officials seized brandy bottles at Pudur yesterday and arrested Mariappan (35) and Periyasamy (41) in this connection. They were remanded under Section 4 (1) (k) of TN Prohibition Act. — Staff Reporter

Students assaulted

NAGERCOIL : Two students were assaulted by a five-member gang in Monday Market on Thursday.

According to police sources, Sunil Kumar and Seelan, both students in an arts college, were waylaid by Jayasingaraja, studying in another college in the same area and his groups. The gang assaulted the duo with sickles and other deadly weapons. Sunil Kumar, who was injured critically, was hospitalised. — Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL: Around 50 teachers attached to primary and aided primary schools staged a demonstration near the District Elementary Educational Office seeking disbursal of salary. The district president, Edwin, led the agitation. — Staff Reporter

Rest room inaugurated

TUTICORIN : P.H. Pandian, former Assembly Speaker, inaugurated a rest room for women lawyers and a two-wheeler parking facility at the District Court Complex here on Wednesday.

The rest room was established at a cost of Rs.2 lakhs, and the parking facility at an outlay of Rs.1.5 lakh, using funds allocated by Mr. Pandian from his Member of Parliament's Constituency Development Fund during his tenure as MP.

SSLC exams begin in tsunami-hit areas

NAGAPATTINAM: SSLC and Matriculation public examinations began today for the students in the tsunami-affected areas in Nagapattinam district.

The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, who inspected various examination centres, said that totally 5,284 candidates were appearing for the examinations in 23 centres. — Staff Reporter

Road roko for water

PERAMBALUR: Villagers of Kovilpalayam, near Kunnam, staged a road roko demanding drinking water supply to their locality. The agitators, led by P. Paramasivam, squatted on the Kunnam - Thittakudi Highway, hindering vehicular traffic for a while this morning. They raised slogans protesting non-supply of drinking water to their area. Following an assurance from the officials that steps would be taken to redress their grievance, they withdrew their stir. — Staff Reporter

Cultural programme

NAGAPATTINAM: The SOS Children's Villages of India organised a special cultural programme for the benefit of the children affected by the tsunami at its SOS main multipurpose activity centre here on Wednesday.

The cultural programme was conducted jointly by a group led by V.R. Devika and the children of the SOS centre. While Devika narrated several interesting stories, Selvaraj from Chennai, a tsunami-affected person, presented a traditional puppet show. Ranvir Prasad, Additional Collector (Relief and Rehabilitation), Nagapattinam, was the chief guest at the function. — Staff Reporter

Loans from co-op banks

ARIYALUR: Co-operative banks in Perambalur district will sanction agricultural credit to the tune of Rs.41.50 crores during the current financial year, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, said today.

Presiding over a `Farmers Grievances Redressal Day' meeting held here today, he said that the Agricultural Engineering Department had released a subsidy to the tune of Rs.15.73 lakhs for repairing 267 old agricultural motors in the district. — Staff Reporter

Life term for murder

Krishnagiri: The Krishnagiri First Additional District Sessions Judge, M. Nandan, awarded life imprisonment to a 43-year-old man here on Thursday on charges of murder. According to the prosecution, the accused, Chokkalingam of Kelamangalam, murdered his wife Prema (35) on February 16, 2002, following a family dispute. The Judge also slapped a fine of Rs. 1,000. - Staff Reporter

Dharmapuri: Two newborn female babies were handed over to the Cradle Baby Centre at the Dharmapuri Government Hospital on Thursday. Farm labourers, Shanthi and Patchiappan of Alahasanahalli village who already have three daughters handed over their fourth female child to the Centre. Man killed in accident

ERODE: A man was killed and wife injured when the motorcycle in which they were travelling collided with a van near the TNEB office on EVN Road on Wednesday. The police have identified the deceased as Arul Thomas (58), an LIC agent of Moolapalayam. He died at the Government Headquarters Hospital. His wife, Alexandria (56), has been admitted to a private hospital. - Staff Reporter

Train services hit

SALEM: Almost all trains suffered a detention of two to three hours in the Salem-Tirupatur sector on Thursday morning following a delay in the completion of a bridge work at Tirupatur.

According to a Railway spokesman here, work on converting a drainage canal under the railway track near the Tirupatur yard into a road got delayed due to the failure of the road crane. The Railway administration had to rush a crane to complete the work and restore the traffic after three hours.

The Palakkad Division, according to its Public Relations Officer Om Prakash Narayan, had also rescheduled a few trains that operated between the Coimbatore-Katpadi sector in the morning to ease the traffic congestion following the delay. - Special Correspondent

Waste management

SALEM: A total of 70 self help groups (SHGs) have responded to the call from the Salem Corporation to collect waste at doorsteps in the city. The Corporation has decided to implement the Solid Waste Management Project on a trail basis in 12 wards and to outsource the services of SHGs to collect waste from door-to-door.

The Corporation sources said that all the applications that were processed on Wednesday had been forwarded to the council.

The council would select the wards for implementing the scheme. "SHGs will be selected based on the location of its members.

Orders on Goondas Act detenus on May 5

CHENNAI: Orders on the habeas corpus petitions of 11 persons associated with the Kanchi Sankara Mutt, and detained under the Goondas Act following the murder of Sankararaman, will be delivered by the Madras High Court on May 5.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan, reserved its orders on Thursday after hearing submissions of senior counsel for the accused, B. Kumar, and senior counsel for the State Government, K.T.S. Tulsi.

Among others who have filed petitions against their detention under the Goondas Act are the arrested Mutt manager, Sundaresa Iyer, and Raghu, younger brother of the junior Sankaracharya. — Staff Reporter

Special buses to

12 places

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation will operate special buses from Chennai to 12 places till June 30.

Special buses will be operated from Chennai to Ooty, Kodaikanal, Bangalore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Kumbakonam, Salem and Coimbatore.

It will also run special services from Bangalore to Velankanni, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli during the period, says a Corporation release. — Special Correspondent

Verdict in Tamaraikani assault case on May 2

MAYILADUTURAI: Arguments in the case against the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko, the former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Minister, Ko.Si. Mani, and the Communist Party of India leader, K. Idumbaiyan, accused in the alleged assault on R. Tamaraikani, then AIADMK leader, were completed before Mrs. D. Jayasurya, Judicial Magistrate, Mayiladuturai, on Thursday. According to T. Chandrasekaran and Velu Kubendhran, counsel for Mr. Vaiko, the magistrate said the verdict would be delivered on May 2. All the three accused would be present in the court on that day. Charges were framed against them on July 15 last for assaulting Mr. Tamaraikani at Siddharkadu during the byelection for the Mayiladuturai constituency on May 19, 1984. — Staff Reporter

Charges framed

against ex-MLA

TUTICORIN: The chief judicial magistrate, V. Gopal, on Thursday framed charges against N. Periyasamy, former DMK MLA, and five of his kin, in a disproportionate wealth case filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

The DVAC had taken up the case against Mr. Periyasamy and five others in 2002. — Staff Reporter

Charge sheet filed against Jayalakshmi

COIMBATORE: The Anti-Corruption wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against Sivakasi Jayalakshmi in a cheating case. A team led by M.S. Sundararajan, Additional Superintendent of Police, filed the charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Coimbatore, on Thursday.

Ms. Jayalakshmi is said to have taken Rs 1.8 lakhs from an entrepreneur, Varadarajan of Coimbatore, in 2001 for funding her business. She was accused of impersonation by posing as a sub-inspector and as the wife of a deputy superintendent of police, currently under suspension.

The CBI, which began a probe into the charges by and against Ms. Jayalakshmi (based on the directions of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court), stumbled on evidence to prove the involvement of Ms. Jayalakshmi in the cheating case as well.
