Appeal to save the tigers

AIZAWL: City-based environmentalists have appealed to the people to protect tigers in Mizoram. In a statement, the League of Environmental Citizens (LEC) said, ``It is the organisation's appeal to the people, especially those who live in Biate village in Champhai district, to protect precious wild animals, particulary tigers, which are near extinction in Mizoram.''

The appleal further said, ``Even if tigers become a threat to our domestic animals, let us make sure that the tigers are chased away and not killed.''

It also mentioned that environment and forest officials as well as the organisation's members had gone to the village to conduct an investigation.

Meanwhile, the first ever full-fledged animal hospital in the North East is expected to be operational in Guwahati by May.

Financed by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), the construction of the hospital, spread over 4000 square feet at the Assam zoo here, is almost complete.

The CZA has sanctioned Rs 15 lakh for construction and another Rs 11 lakh for equipment.

Sources at the zoo said the authority tried to ensure the standards recommended by the CZA during the construction.

The hospital will have a fully equipped operation theatre, modern machines and laboratory facilities integral to any modern healthcare unit.

A senior official at the zoo said except adult elephants, the other herbivores, including small elephants, and carnivores will get treatment here. The officials claimed the hospital would be of great help in taking quick preventive measures. — UNI.
