Farm workers' union on warpath
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Union has threatened to halt the irrigation projects if the Government fails to pay compensation to the displaced people, including farm labour and artisans, before commencing the works.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the union general secretary, B. Venkat, and other office-bearers, demanded that the Government reserve 25 per cent of the land under each project for allocation to farmers, agricultural workers and artisans on the lines of Maharashtra.
Some four to five lakh people face displacement all over the State by the proposed irrigation projects.
The union leaders wanted payment of wages equivalent to 1,500 mandays to the farm labour.
