The fest begins: O. Anantharamaiah, Vice-Chancellor, Tumkur University, inaugurating `Halcyon-2005,'a three-day summer fest, in Tumkur on Thursday.
TUMKUR: M.N. Channabasappa, Principal, Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, on Thursday promised O. Anantharamaiah, Vice-Chancellor, Tumkur University, full support in making the varsity a model one. The assurance was made at the inauguration of SIT's summer fest, `Halcyon-2005,' by Dr. Anantharamaiah here. This was Dr. Anantharamaiah's first public appearance after taking charge of the post on March 24. The SIT is in the process of securing a deemed university status. Dr. Channabasappa said the 42-year-old SIT played host for many institutions here in their initial days. Bangalore University opened its postgraduate centre on the SIT premises in 1990 and this led the way to the opening of a full-fledged varsity here. Dr. Channabasappa said although the SIT is not a constituent college of Tumkur University (it is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum), "we will extend every possible help and cooperation in building the university." Dr. Anantharamaiah said as a college student here in the 1970s he watched with interest the SIT's growth. Students from Kashmir, Assam, Manipur and West Bengal joined the SIT even during those days. For him and his classmates it was a mini-India. S.M. Shashidhar, chairman of the festival committee, said 31 events are slated for the three-day event. Five hundred student teams from 50 medical, engineering and dental colleges all over the country are taking part in it.
