`Contempt of Courts Act misused'

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: M.F. Saldanha, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court, on Thursday said that the `Contempt of Courts Act' is being misused.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Saldanha remarked that there should be a public debate on all orders passed. The freedom to criticise should be there and the `Contempt of Courts Act' should be sparingly used, he said.

On consumer courts, he said that they are not working well and consequently awareness about the consumer rights is not increasing.

Mr. Saldanha said he is willing to assist the State Government in an honorary capacity if it wants his service. "I am ready assist the Government.I will do anything that will benefit the people," he said.
