KASARAGOD: The Minister for Water Resources, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, today visited the houses of the victims of the accident in Majakkar in Muliyar panchayat, where ten people died when a portion of the mound dug for the proposed check dam caved in on Tuesday afternoon. The Minister also handed over a cheque for Rs. one lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. He also instructed the District Collector, Minhaj Alam, who accompanied the Minister, to explore the possibility of constructing houses for the victims with the assistance of the grama panchayat.

Later speaking to reporters at the Guest house, the Minister said an expert committee would soon be appointed to collect soil samples from the area to study and report on such sensitive areas so as to prevent such eventualities. Offers of temporary employment to at least one of the relatives of the victim would also be explored, the Minister added. C. T. Ahmedali, MLA and the Muliyra panchayat president, Mariyumma Abdul Khader, were among those who accompanied the Minister. The Muliyar Grama panchayat standing committee chairman, K. B. Muhammed Kunhi, said that the panchayat is ready to build houses for the victims provided the Government was ready to give land for the purpose.
