Two die in M.P. police firing

BHOPAL: Two persons were killed on the spot in police firing at Peepalkhedi village near Soyat in Shajapur district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

According to information received here, the police fired after a mob turned violent and started throwing stones following an altercation between the police and some persons who were thrashing a villager suspected to be a child lifter.

Police post attacked

A police officer, posted on duty near Balaji temple at Peepalkhedi village, where a cattle fair is on, told this correspondent on phone that the agitated crowd set fire to the temporary police chowki at the village fair and some police vehicles. The mob also damaged the local Janapad Panchayat office.

Those killed in the police firing have been identified as Bal Singh (36) and Ratan (25). It is learnt that many persons, including half-a-dozen policemen, were injured. The Sub-divisional officer (SDOP)-Agar was among the first to reach the troubled spot this afternoon.

The Sahajapur Superintendent of Police could not be contacted as he was on his way to Soyat, a small interior town near the Rajasthan border.
