IOB beats Karnataka XI

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) beat Karnataka XI 3-1 in the 43rd All Indian Bombay Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at the Mahindra Stadium on Thursday.

IOB was definitely far more impressive than in its previous outing against EME on Wednesday, with its forces combining well in the 70 minute play. R. Vimalanathan, L. Anandan and D. Mahendra Singh scored for IOB while Devadass found the mark for Karnataka XI. A fine finish by R. Vimalanathan in the early minutes of the opening session was just the indicator of how well IOB had mentally and tactically prepared to take on its Southern neighbour.Karnataka XI had its moments when it offset its opponent's goal through a quick counterattack and Devadass found the mark.IOB will now take on Punjab Police in the third round.

Punjab Police warmed up with a 3-0 win over Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF).

Former international Jugraj Singh was the star with two drag flick attempts after Sarabjit Singh put his team ahead in the fifth minute.

In other matches Border Security Force beat Southern Railway 5-2 and South Central Railway prevailed 2-1 over Maharashtra State Police (MSP). Ranjit Singh (2), S. Khujur (2) and Mangru Tirkey scored for BSF and Diwakar and Jagath Jothi for Southern Railway. S. Dung Dung and Amit Shrivas were successful for SCR and Anklesh Yesur for MSP.
