KOLLAM: The construction work for the Rs. 38-crore drinking water supply scheme for Karunagapally, Alapad, Ochira and Klapana panchayats will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at a function to be held at the Ochira Maidan on April 30. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the Karunagapally MLA, A. N. Rajan Babu, said the work on the scheme would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister by laying the foundation stone for the water treatment plant with a 12-lakh litre capacity overhead tank at Ochira. He said the source for the scheme, being implemented by the Kerala Water Authority, would be the Kandiyur Kadavu course of the Achencoil river in Mavelikara. Water from there would be pumped to a distance of 16.76 km to reach the treatment plant at Ochira. Under the scheme, a ground tank with 4.34-lakh litre capacity had been completed at Karunagapally and an overhead tank with 14.2 litre capacity was under construction at Karunagapally.
