46 clear examination

DHARWAD: Forty-six persons have cleared "Part A" of the Fellowship and Membership Examination of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, conducted by the SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad.

Of the 21 who appeared for the "Part B" examinations, 14 have passed, says a press note issued by the college.

The SDM College of Dental Sciences has been conducting the examinations in Dharwad on behalf of the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, U.K., since 1994. — Special Correspondent

`Concentrate on applied research'

BELGAUM: The former Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, S.G. Desai, has called upon medical scientists to concentrate on applied research rather than fundamental research.

Presiding over a lecture series by Mark Kleinmen, Resident Plastic Surgery, New York University School of Medicine, at the KLES Hospital's Department of Plastic Surgery here on Wednesday, he stressed the need to reach research findings to people.

He lamented that pharmaceutical companies are selling drugs at prices not affordable to the common man. — Staff Correspondent

Action sought

TUMKUR: The Congress has demanded that criminal cases be filed against officials responsible for undertaking roadworks without ensuring precautionary measures at Kodipalya, where four persons were electrocuted on Thursday.

S.P. Muddahanume Gowda, president of the Tumkur District Congress Committee and former Kunigal MLA, who visited the accident spot, told presspersons that the work was taken up ignoring power lines.

He said the Government must pay Rs. 2 lakhs as compensation to the family members of each of the deceased and Rs. 1 lakh to each of the injured person.

Seminar

MANGALORE: The city unit of the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will hold a seminar as part of its continuing professional education programme here on Tuesday, a press release issued here said.

The national chairman of the council, V.C. James, will inaugurate the seminar.

Anil Xavier, an advocate of the Kerala High Court, will speak on "Alternative dispute resolution" while Vinay Mruthunjaya, a chartered accountant, will speak on "Networking and recent development in code ethics." — Staff Correspondent

Music camp

MANGALORE: Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education, Mangalore, and Sangama Kalakshetra, Shimoga, would hold a music camp in "Sugama Sangeetha" (light music) here for a week from Monday, a press release said.

Light music singers such as Shankar Shanbhog, Raju Ananthaswamy, K.S. Surekha and others will train the participants.

The camp will be held in the afternoon every day. — Staff Correspondent

Bank exceeds target

KOLAR: Kolar Gramin Bank has made strides during the previous fiscal year, K.P. Hegde, Chairman of the bank, has said.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he expressed happiness at the pace at which the bank achieved its targets during the previous financial year. He said the bank's deposits stood at Rs. 238.73 crores as against the target of Rs. 225 crores, while the over all business of the bank reached Rs. 422 crores registering a growth of 20.30 per cent over the last year.

The advances stood at Rs. 183.44 crores against the target of Rs. 180.00 crores, of which Rs. 130 crores has been allocated for the priority sector. — Correspondent

Seed varieties banned

GULBARGA: The Government has banned the sale and marketing of two varieties of cotton seeds marketed by the multinational seeds company Mahyco — Chamatkar Cotton 222 and 223 seeds — in the State. An official press release said here today that the decision of the Government follows a study conducted by a team of experts on complaints that farmers who had cultivated the varieties of cotton suffered losses last year due to fall in yield.

The release warned farmers against using the two varieties of seeds marketed by Mahyco and advised them to inform Agriculture Department officials if the seeds are sold. — Special Correspondent

Anti-naxal battalion

KARWAR: S.N. Borkar, Director-General of Police, has said that a new battalion of 1,000 policemen will be formed in the State to deal with naxalite activities. The Union Government had made such a suggestion to all naxalite-affected States. The battalion will be used by the State, except during national emergency, he added.

Mr. Borkar said that the Union Government would bear the expenses of the battalion, including recruitment and three years' training.

The expenses would later be shared both by the Union and the State Governments. Youth aged between 20 and 22 years will be recruited. They will later be absorbed in the Karnataka State Reserve Police after a period of 10 years. — Correspondent

Memo on tree felling

Bangalore: Representatives of `Hasire Usiru,' a campaign against tree felling, has submitted a memorandum to the Governor, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister signed by over 4,000 citizens to express their opposition to the tree felling in Bangalore. The memorandum demanded that there should be no more felling of trees and a committee of concerned citizens and government officials be constituted for decision making in any further tree felling.

It has also demanded that meetings of the task force on traffic management be held transparently. — Staff Reporter

`Foster parent' service

Bangalore: Students and professionals visiting the U.S. for the first time need not worry about procedural issues such as obtaining a social security number, opening a bank account and enlisting utility services. A Bangalore-based company, TT Enterprises in association with the AIG International Services of the U.S., will act as "foster parent" providing all these services in the U.S.

The Managing Director of TT Enterprises, P.Varadan, said here that almost all students and many professionals face several problems on landing in the U.S. and they take nearly three to four months to settle down. To overcome the initial hiccups, TT Enterprises has launched a "Relocation Support Membership" (RSM) programme

Membership is open to students at $230 and for professionals at $250.

`Change Chief Minister'

Bangalore: The former All-India Congress Committee member T.D.R. Harishchandra from Tirthahalli has pleaded for a Janata Dal (S) leader taking over as the Chief Minister of the State and heading the coalition Government. In a letter addressed to the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda here today, he said the JD(S) should press for any of the three leaders — the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah; the JD(S) Working President, H.D. Kumaraswamy; or the Assembly Speaker, Krishna, to become the Chief Minister. — Special Correspondent

Illicit liquor dens raided, two arrested

BELGAUM: The officials of the Excise Department raided illicit liquor dens near three villages and seized materials used in liquor preparation worth Rs. 3 lakhs on Thursday.

On a tip off, the team raided liquor manufacturing dens in Mutyanhatti, Basavankolla, and Hulyanur forest areas.

The police have arrested two brothers, Ningappa Yellappa Kempa and Bharmanna Yellappa Kempa, in this connection.
