Forest guards open fire, kill man
Staff Correspondent
MYSORE:
An alleged timber smuggler was shot dead by Forest Department personnel when they opened fire in self-defence in the Mettikuppe forest range in H.D. Kote taluk on Wednesday.
The dead was identified as Shivappa, 35, of Jawahar haadi.
The incident took place deep inside the forest when the forest guards Eeraiah, Nandish and Chikkanna noticed a gang of six to seven persons felling a teak tree.
When challenged, the gang members attacked the forest guards with weapons, forcing the latter to open fire.
According to Deputy Conservator of Forests, Yatish Kumar, it was not an organised gang of smugglers but a few local villagers who were living on the fringes of the forest. Shivappa's body was shifted to the hospital in H.D. Kote for post mortem. A large number of people gathered near the hospital, leading to tension.
