Four die as bus touches power line

Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR: Four persons, including an old woman, were electrocuted and eight were injured when the bus they were travelling in came in contact with a live power line at Kodipalya, near here, on Thursday.

An eyewitness in Kodipalya, Gurunanjappa, said the incident occurred around 11 a.m. The bus was coming to Tumkur from Bangalore, via Magadi and Sankaghatta, and there were only around 19 passengers on board. Work on road elevation is in progress at the accident spot. The driver took the bus to the left side of the road and its roof touched the power line.

Two of the four passengers who were electrocuted have been identified by the police as Anandaiah, 37, of Hullenahalli in Magadi taluk, and Narayanappa, 45, of Kottenahalli in Nelamangala taluk of Bangalore Rural district. The other two — an old woman aged around 60 and a man aged around 28 years — are yet to be identified. The eight injured passengers brought to the General Hospital here include two children and three women. Their names were entered in the hospital records as Vinoda, Akshata, Shamshada, Parvathamma, Manjula, Ramakrishna and Gaibar Khan of Veerapura, near Magadi.

A doctor who attended to them said, "They are out of danger."

PWD blamed

U.R. Badigar, Superintending Engineer of the Bangalore Electric Supply Company, who visited the spot, told The Hindu in the evening that the 11-kV power line had all safety measures, until the Public Works Department began to elevate the road to help widen it. The BESCOM staff had warned those supervising the work several times during the past three days, he said.

Shankare Gowda, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, was inaccessible since this afternoon.
