Course in jewellery sales

THRISSUR: A course in jewellery salesmanship has been launched for the first time in the country by the Chemmanur Academy of Advanced Studies, a sister concern of the Chemmanur Group of Jewelleries based in Irinjalakkuda.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the academy officials said the six-months course would have three-month theory class and three months of on-the-job training.

Gold assessment, customer service, spoken English and basic computer skills would be the topics of study. There would be total placement for the first batch.

George Chemmanur and others were among present. The course was formally inaugurated by Joy Alukkas, chairman of the Joy Alukkas Group at a function here in the evening. — Staff Reporter

Advani arriving

today

KOZHIKODE : The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and BJP national president, L K. Advani, will be in the city tomorrow.

His main engagement is in the afternoon at Malabar Palace where he would give away the S. K Pottakkad Literary Award to P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, for his book of poems titled "Kala danam.''

Mr. Advani will leave by 4 p.m. for Malappuram district where he will inaugurate a rally organised at Kuttippuram to mark the State convention of the BJP youth wing, Bharataiya Yuva Morcha, in the evening. — Special Correspondent

UNESCO signs pact with C-DIT

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) here has signed an agreement with UNESCO to jointly execute a digital documentation project on Koodiyattom. The project would include documentation of different styles of performance, dramatisation, music, acting, training and literature. The first phase of the project would cover four masters and their style of performance. Besides Koodiyattom, the project would cover Chakiar Kooth and Nangiar Kooth. UNESCO and C-DIT are also jointly setting up a digital heritage archive and library with the help of the Union Ministry of Culture, at the Vyloppilly Samskriti Bhavan here. — Special correspondent

`No relevance to rapprochement'

MALAPPURAM: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, has said that the word rapprochement has lost its meaning in the present scenario in the party. Rapprochement is applicable only to those holding different opinions within the party. It has no relevance when a section is about to leave the party, he said. Mr. Pillai was inaugurating the 85th anniversary of the Indian National Congress's historical meeting at Manjeri near here today. — Staff Reporter

Answer keys of entrance test

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has published the answer keys of the entrance test for admission to the engineering and medical courses for 2005. The answer keys will also be available on the website cee-kerala.org. The common entrance examination was held on April 25 and 26 for the engineering course and on April 27 and 28 for the medical and allied courses. Complaints regarding questions or answers should be brought to the notice of the CEE, with documents supporting them, by May 5. — Staff Reporter

Free ration

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The free ration being given to the workers of the Bamboo Corporation will be continued in May. The Industries and Social Welfare Minister, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, said on Thursday that each family would be given 5 kg of rice per week. The rice will be supplied by the Civil Supplies Department and the expenditure met from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vijayaraghavan Smaraka Samithi has decided to give the 10th award for excellence in journalism instituted in the name of the distinguished journalist posthumously to Vaikkom Chandrasekharan Nair and Kaniyapuram Ramachandran for their overall contributions. The Samithi took the decision at its meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. The award would be presented in Thiruvananthapuram on June 3. — Special Correspondent

Spirit seized

KOLLAM: Excise officials from the Pathanapuram Range led by Inspector V.A. Pradeep seized 315 litres of spirit while it was being transported in an Ambassador car on Wednesday. Two persons travelling in the car have been arrested. They were identified K. Somasundaram, 46, and Manoj Kumar, 25. Both were produced before a Magistrate Court in Punalur and remanded. — Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kollam SP, S. Sreejith, will inaugurate the district conference of the Kerala Police Association here on May 3. — Staff Reporter.

Defence adalat

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 405 applications were received at the Defence pension adalat at the Kanakakunnu Palace here on Thursday. An official release issued here said the adalat cell, which had been functioning for the past one month, had received 405 complaints.
