KOZHIKODE: The BJP State president, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, on Thursday claimed that the NSS and SNDP Yogam were closer to his party than ever. At a press conference, Mr. Pillai said that since the NSS had adopted a policy of remaining equidistant from political parties in the State, the BJP had not been able to build strong bonds of friendship. But now, the relationship of the BJP with both the NSS and SNDP had become stronger. Replying to a question, he said it was too early to predict the political impact of the alliance being forged by the Nair and Ezhava communities since "the NSS and SNDP Yogam are not political outfits." But he said the stand taken by the NSS on important social issues would politically benefit the BJP. "The BJP already has 11 to 12 percent share of votes in the State. If it increases by another two percent, the BJP's political strength will stand enhanced in significant measure," he said. The BJP leader claimed his party was showing clear signs of growth in Kerala and said "this fact" had been admitted even in the assessment by the CPI(M). In recent byelections to local bodies, the performance of the BJP had been satisfactory. In answer to another question, the BJP leader demanded an inquiry into the allegation made by the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, about the results of examinations in Malappuram district. He said that since the allegation had been made by a person in a responsible position, it had to be probed. It was also announced that the BJP would organise a series of programmes in the State in the coming months as part of its efforts to beef up its presence.
