KHAMMAM: Eighty members of village development committees floated by the CPI(Maoist) in Bhadrachalam division on Thursday surrendered before the police and pledged to sever ties with extremist groups. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Uday Bhaskar, said local guerrilla squads of Charla and Wajeedu operating in remote pockets of the division had been using village committees for extortion from traders and the rich. The dalams also used them for transportation of provisions and materials. Some elected representatives of gram panchayats were among those who surrendered. He said the Maoists formed development committees taking advantage of the talks with the Government in the past six months.
Reign of terror
He said members belonging to the villages of Pusuguppa, Bodanalli, Ramachandrapuram, Muttaram, Bollaram , Loguru, Pusur, Chandrupatla, Krishnapuram, Mulkanpalli, Chintaguppa and Veraigudem were not involved in any incidents. In the meantime, the Maoists and tribal organisations backed by them, struck terror in the Kunta area (close to Bhadrachalam division) of Chhattisgarh, killing eight persons in different villages in the last four days. They killed a BJP activist at Kunta village on Wednesday. The killings triggered an exodus of farmers to Bhadrachalam from Bastar region. The police said Gottikoya tribals were used by the Maoists for perpetrating violence. The police could keep a tab on tribals coming to Chintoor and other bordering mandals in the district in search of workers.
