Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court Judge, K.D. Deshpande, on Thursday convicted Raghupathy, Jayadeva, Nandakumar and Kishore Kumar, sons of Sheshappa Gowda, for assaulting Revathi and Lokamma, Scheduled Caste women, and fined them Rs. 30,000.

It is said that the four brothers destroyed temporary huts of the two women in Kottaje reserve forest area in Belthangady police station limits on January 25, 1999.

The accused have been sentenced to undergo three periods of one-month imprisonment and one period of two-months imprisonment on various charges.

The four accused, along with Laxmana, Kamalaksha, Sanjeeva, Deekaiah Gowda and Kushalppa Gowda, who have been acquitted by the court, had trespassed into parambok (government) land where Revathi and Lokamma are said to have put up temporary huts. The group assaulted them with sickle and clubs.

The Second Additional Public Prosecutor, K. Udayashankar, said here that the accused pulled down the huts and left the place after threatening the women with dire consequences. While Lokamma was grievous injured, Revathi escaped with simple injuries.

Mr. Udayashankar said the aggregate of all the sentences against the accused will not exceed two years. Besides, Revathi will receive Rs 5,000 as compensation and Lokamma Rs. 10,000, he said.

Sentenced

Mr. Deshpande, has sentenced a person to life imprisonment while acquitting two of his accomplices in a murder case that took place at Kotimura in Mangalore Rural (Kankanady) police station limits on September 14, 2003. The judge has also directed the accused to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000, of which Rs. 10,000 is to be paid to the mother of Satish, the victim.

Mr. Udayashankar said the main accused, Gopal Poojary (34), of Padavu and his accomplice, Jayantha and Dayananda, accosted Satish. Satish inflicted a minor wound on Gopal, who retaliated and dropped a heavy stone on Satish's face, causing injuries which led to the latter's death.

Mr. Udayashankar said the accused and the victim were known to each other and had parted ways after a personal rift. There was not enough evidence to prove the charges against Jayantha and Dayananda.
