MANGALORE: The project to concrete the Lady Hill-Urva Stores stretch will take some more days to be completed. This 1.2-km road was closed for traffic in October. The concreting work was scheduled to be completed by February 25 as promised by the Mayor, Purandaradas Kulur. But it appears from the state of the road that it will take more time before the project is completed as many works connected with the road are yet to be awarded to contractors. The Mangalore City Corporation took up the concreting of the stretch as the last link in the 5-km Bunts Hostel Circle-Kottara Chowki road. The corporation has spent over Rs. 10 crores from its coffers on the project with no help from the Government, the former Mayor M. Shashidhar Hegde said. During his term as Mayor in 2001-02, Mr. Hegde took up the concreting of the Lady Hill-PVS Circle stretch of 1.8 km at a cost of Rs. 4 crores. In comparison, the Lady Hill-Urva Store road should have been concreted in February. But thanks to official apathy, many works are yet to be awarded to contractors. Official sources told The Hindu that tenders are yet to be invited to construct the footpaths and pave it with interlocking blocks, while no decision has been taken on the medians and electric poles. However, these are the main works, the Ashoknagar corporator, Kamalaksha Kundar, said. But there is nothing one can do as everything should go according to the rules to ensure transparency, he added. Mr. Kulur said the road will be opened to light traffic on Monday while other facilities such as paved footpaths, storm-water drains, blocked medians and lighting system will be in place by May 28.
