MADURAI: : The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday issued notice to the Corporation Commissioner and office-bearers of Walkers' Club, on a writ petition alleging "illegal" collection of fees at an indoor badminton stadium near Vandiyur Lake in K. K. Nagar. According to the petitioner, M. Alagar of Sadhasiva Nagar, the Corporation constructed the indoor stadium for the benefit of general public last year. Subsequently, the maintenance of the stadium was handed over to Walkers' Club at K.K. Nagar, subject to conditions that it should not collect fee from players and the maintenance expenditure, including electricity and water charges, should be borne by the club members. But, contrary to the conditions, the club demanded Rs.2, 800 as non-refundable deposit from each player, that too without issuing any receipt, the petitioner alleged. He also stated that on April 11, a list of members, approved by the executive committee of the club to play in the stadium, was released, of which 18 had paid Rs.2, 800, and 13 Rs.1, 000. "All others were barred from playing in the indoor badminton stadium." The petitioner's counsel, M.P. Rajan, submitted that the very purpose of building an indoor stadium for public use had been defeated. He also brought it to the notice of the court that though several representations were made to the Commissioner on the issue, there was no action taken till date.
