Plan to enrol dropouts in regular schools

Staff Reporter

Officials confident of meeting the target

MADURAI: `Send my friend to school' — the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)theme for bringing dropouts to regular schools has got underway under the auspices of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) with the State Government taking up a weeklong campaign to meet enrolment targets.

The programme was taken up after the Union Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh, wrote to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, asking her for the cooperation of her Government in meeting the `Education for All' goals, SSA officials, who have been monitoring the scheme's implementation, told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

The theme, coined by the UNESCO to bring `out-of-school' children into the mainstream of education, is being implemented at the state, district and block levels, the authorities said.

To give momentum to the programme, the State Government has written to Chief Educational Officers to hold rallies, pledges, thematic competitions and finally the enrolment drive.

"As per the plan, we are asking school headmasters and teachers across the district to get the dropouts into regular schools and make them participate in elementary education," Chief Educational Officer K. Sridevi said.

Since the programme is being implemented simultaneously in all districts the officials are confident of meeting the target.

The last date of the campaign is April 30.

According to the State Government's communication, the enrolment of children into regular schools should be over by April 28 and those in the Alternative/ Innovative Education Centres must be motivated to undergo regular schooling, the Assistant Elementary Education Officer, S. Madhavan, said.

In Madurai district, the SSA covers 15 ranges with focus on Standards I to VIII, he said, adding that the Assistant Elementary Education Officers had been asked to give a push to the enrolment drive.
