CHENNAI: : The Chennai Police is preparing to receive the ISO - 9001: 2000 certification. Several aspects have to be fulfilled, the police only after which the certificate will be issued, say senior officers. Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj said apart from the routine works such as prevention and detection of crime cases, the police have to adopt the practice of `reaching out to public.' "For this a police station has to have a people-friendly look with a good ambience, to gain the people's confidence". Getting a certificate from an international organisation will motivate our personnel and it will help us to set higher standards to aspire and maintain it. The process for obtaining the certificate has begun, Mr. Nataraj said. After issuing a certificate to a service sector, the authorities from the International Standards Organisation will conduct checks once in six months, which would be valid for three years, Mr. Nataraj added.
Property restored
The Commissioner returned to the owners stolen property worth Rs. 40 lakhs, including diamond jewellery on Thursday. A total of 64 cases of `bureau pulling' have been so far registered and 17 `grill offence' cases were yet to be resolved. With the closing down of schools for summer holidays, Mr. Nataraj appealed to the residents to inform police whenever they go out of town. Such houses would get additional protection and registered with the ``locked house register'' in every police station.
