CHENNAI: The descendants, relatives, friends and those who had any academic or personal connection with him or his mathematics today got together to remember the man who knew infinity, Srinivasa Ramanujan, on his 85th death anniversary. "An ideal school student is only one facet of Ramanujan," said K. Srinivasa Rao, former Senior Professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and presently the director, Ramanujan Museum and Math Education Centre (RMMEC), Royapuram. He said that Ramanujan's achievement could be compared to that of Ramana Maharishi, who transcended knowledge and reached the pinnacle of glory after spending 40 years in silence. His results were derived out of intuition and for this reason he earned the titles of `intuition incarnate' and `Svayambhu.' He made a presentation from his two CD ROMs on the life and works of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology. Aru. Sankaralingam, RMMEC president, said it was the interest shown by the mathematics teacher, P.K. Srinivasan, that the museum of a collection of Ramanujan's letters had come up in Royapuram. "It was his view that Ramanujan should not be hero-worshipped as some mythological figure. Despite his failing health, P.K. Sreenivasan cannot take his mind off Ramanujan and mathematics," he said. M. Mahadevan, secretary, Association of Mathematics Teachers of India, said the association published two books on the creativity of Ramanujan, jottings from his work and relevant to school children in the primary, middle and secondary levels have been published. "The first edition has been sold out and we are coming out with the revised edition," he said.
