National Highway-9 stretch to be widened

J.S. Ifthekhar

Steps to ease traffic congestion, reduce incidence of accidents

  • 4-lane road to be converted into 14 lanes on 12-km stretch
  • 22 junctions to be improved
  • Engineering wing of JNTU preparing plans
  • Paid parking along the road mooted

HYDERABAD: The Ranga Reddy district administration has proposed to widen National Highway 9 and carry out improvement of important junctions en route to ease traffic congestion and reduce the incidence of accidents.

The existing four-lane road on the Vijayawada route is proposed to be widened to 14 lanes for a stretch of 12 km from Gaddianaram up to 2 km beyond Hayatnagar at a cost of Rs. 56 crores. Besides, 22 junctions have been identified in consultation with the Cyberabad police for immediate improvement both on NH 9 and other important roads.

"The traffic engineering wing of the JNTU has been asked to prepare the plans," said the Ranga Reddy Collector, L. Premchandra Reddy.

Since the 10 municipalities in the district are situated around the State Capital, there is heavy traffic leading to congestion of roads. As heavy vehicles, including sand-laden trucks, now park along the road, the district administration has decided to go in for private paid parking.

A notification was issued recently asking those with vacant land in busy areas to register for the paid parking scheme. Two persons have already come forward in Qutbullapur and Serilingampally municipalities and more are expected to follow suit. The municipalities are also being asked to notify no parking zones in their respective areas, the Collector said.

For the first time a solid waste management plan is being chalked out covering all the 10 municipalities and a panel has been formed to prepare a plan. At present the civic bodies are dumping their waste in the open in an unscientific way. A committee has been constituted with the municipal commissioners, regional director, Municipal Administration and RDOs to prepare a plan with a common perspective for all the municipalities.

The district administration is also considering using the GIS technology for development of roads, water and drainage system. Properties will also be mapped using the GIS. The Kapra and Malkajgiri municipalities have already begun work on the project.

    Integrated approach

To ensure integrated approach to development of the municipalities as one unit is possible largely due to the coordination between the district level officials and their counterparts in the civic bodies. On a fixed day every week each municipality holds a coordination committee meeting on a fixed day every week with the commissioner and all officials visiting a particular area, identifying problems and sorting them out. This is followed by a district level meeting chaired by the Collector on the first Thursday of every month.
