KOCHI: Saravanan, who was arrested by the police on Wednesday for having allegedly defrauded a woman posing as a soothsayer, appeared before mediapersons here on Thursday along with the woman in question. The woman, Ananthalakshmi, said she had approached the man after the death of her son and husband. Saravanan had taken a loan of Rs. 1 lakh and he had been regularly repaying the instalments, according to her. The arrest had been made on a complaint made by Ananthalakshmi's daughter,Vidya Venugopal, that Saravanan had duped her mother. Ananthalakshmi had given money and gold worth several lakhs to the man, according to the complainant. The complaint had said that Saravanan misled Ananthalakshmi by convincing her that he would be able to bring back her son. The boy had died in an accident in Goa in 2001 while he was on a study tour, according to the police. The accused allegedly took Rs. 8.5 lakhs and 80 sovereigns of gold from Ananthalakshmi, the complainant's mother between 2002 and April 2005. The man was released from police custody after Ananthalakshmi reportedly told the police that she had no complaint against Saravanan.
