`Lift ban on appointments'

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The Federation of All Kerala University Employees Organisations has urged the Government to lift the ban on appointments existing in various universities in the State. The State working committee meeting of the federation pointed out that the eight-year old ban had affected the functioning of universities. — Staff Reporter

Sankara university refutes reports

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit has denied reports that university authorities had curtailed organisational freedom on the campus. A press release issued by the university said the Syndicate meet held on March 26 had decided not to allow any protests or meetings near the administrative office on the main campus in Kalady. The decision was taken after a section of employees blocked the Syndicate members and held a meeting inside the administrative building on March 26. — Staff Reporter

Plea to reduce

ST on diesel

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation has protested against the Government decision not to reduce the sales tax on diesel. The Government has not taken any steps in this regard even after a decision taken by the high-level committee for Value Added Tax to unify sales tax for diesel at 20 per cent, Khalid Mundappilly, president of the federation, said in a release. — Staff Reporter

Travel agency

partner arrested

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: One person was arrested by the Ernakulam Town South Police for issuing fake visas to three persons. The partner of Sun International Travel Agency, Paul Antony, 43, of Irinjalakuda was arrested on Thursday.

The travel agency owner, Jaimon of Kottayam, is absconding. According to the police, the travel agency issued visas to Suresh of Chengamanad, Wilson of Kottakkal and Sivakumar of Mukundapuram to work in Tanzania in Africa.

They had paid Rs. 1.10 lakhs each for the visas in September 2004. However, on reaching Tanzania, the local police arrested the three for fake documents and they were imprisoned for two weeks. They were released after intervention by the Malayali Associations in Tanzania. — Staff Reporter
